General Renovation and Modernization of ICU Units H2–H4, Großhadern University Hospital

The modernization of several wards in the bed tower of the Großhadern University Hospital of the University of Munich was planned and implemented by Kai Otto Architekten.
The aim of the project was to dismantle the existing facilities from 1975, optimize the spatial organization in terms of functionality, and adapt both the design and technical standards to contemporary requirements.

As part of the renovation, modern ward areas were created that meet the demands of a state-of-the-art intensive care and nursing infrastructure as well as current fire protection regulations.
In addition to functional improvements, the works included the replacement of windows, comprehensive fire safety upgrades, and a visual enhancement of the interior spaces.

All construction phases were carried out while the hospital remained fully operational. To minimize disruptions to adjacent functional and patient care areas, detailed noise and dust protection concepts were implemented, ensuring that day-to-day clinical operations could continue smoothly.

Through the successful modernization of Units H2, H3, and H4, the existing building structure was sustainably upgraded, creating a contemporary environment that combines functional efficiency with a high quality of stay for patients, relatives, and staff alike.
