The modernization of several wards in the inpatient building of Großhadern Hospital at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich was designed and implemented by Kai Otto Architekten. The aim of the project was to dismantle existing structures dating from 1975, optimize the spatial layout functionally, and upgrade both the design and technical standards to meet contemporary requirements.

As part of the refurbishment, modern ward areas were created that meet the demands of current intensive care and nursing infrastructure, as well as applicable fire safety regulations. In addition to functional improvements, the works included the replacement of windows, comprehensive fire protection upgrades, and an overall visual enhancement of the interiors.

All construction phases were carried out while the hospital remained fully operational. To minimize disruption to adjacent functional and care areas, detailed noise control concepts and dust protection measures were implemented, ensuring the continued smooth operation of the hospital.

With the successful modernization of wards H2, H3, and H4, the existing building fabric was sustainably upgraded, creating a contemporary environment that ensures both functional efficiency and a high quality of stay for patients, visitors, and staff.
