Kai Otto Architekten constructed a single-storey flat-roofed extension for technical building management and to ensure the security of supply for a property owned by the Free State of Bavaria. The project included the creation of workshop, office, storage, and staff areas as well as a combined heat and power plant, providing a total of approximately 250 square meters of usable space. In addition, the fire alarm system in the existing building was renewed. All construction works were carried out while the adjacent scientific buildings remained fully operational.
Sustainability within the Project
The newly constructed single-storey building was designed with an extensive green roof as a key sustainability measure. The green roof creates valuable habitat for insects and thereby strengthens biodiversity at the site. At the same time, it temporarily retains rainwater and releases it gradually into the drainage system, helping to relieve infrastructure during heavy rainfall events.
In addition, the green roof enhances the building’s thermal performance, reduces energy demand, and contributes to a more balanced microclimate through evaporative cooling.
